DUBAI EXPO 2020

EXPO 2020 is a Universal Scale Registered Exposition time slot sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE). It is held every 5 years in a different country, and generally spans over a 6 month period. The chosen country follows a theme that can apply to the whole of humanity. Eg. Man and His World and Discovery are themes that have been done in the past.

The first Expo was held in 1851 in London and was called The Great Exhibition. It was the hallmark of a world aspiring to strengthen its connections and celebrate its cultural diversity. It served as a meeting point for the global community to share innovations and make progress on global economy and development thus offering the world an improved quality of life.

On 27th November 2013, Dubai won the right to host this prestigious event beating Izmir (Turkey), Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Yekaterinburg (Russia) with the theme CONNECTING MINDS, CREATING THE FUTURE. "In today’s highly interconnected world, a renewed vision of progress and development based on shared purpose and commitment is key. While a single human mind, an individual country, or a specific community is both unique and remarkable, it is by working collaboratively that we truly advance." Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had said in support of the bid.

The World Expo in Dubai in 2020 will be the first to be held in the MENA & SA (Middle East and North Africa & South Asia) region. So this was not only a matter of tremendous pride but of great celebration as fireworks erupted at the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa and a national holiday was declared. In fact the world’s tallest commercial tower to be built at Jumeirah Lake Towers is all set to be christened “Burj 2020” in honour of the World Expo2020.

The Sheikh has already issued a decree to set up a committee that will oversee the strategic plans to organise and make preparations for this Expo. This committee will operate under His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and will evaluate the suitability and efficiency of Dubai’s infrastructure as well as determine the Emirates technical, economic and security requirements to present an event of this stature.

As the Ruler said, Dubai is all set to "astonish the world," in 2020. The staging of the world fair and the preparations leading up to it are expected to result in 277,000 new jobs in the UAE, an injection of nearly $40 billion into the economy leading to a spurt as well as an anticipated boost in tourism from approximately 25 million to 100 million tourists being expected.Various reports analysing the recent economic downturn predict that World Expo 2020 will lead to a property bubble.
